Best Ways to Replace Missing Teeth

Apr 19 • 2 minute read

After a person has lost a tooth, they realize just how vital teeth are to a normal lifestyle. Suddenly, meals become a challenging experience, and a smile can trigger feelings of self-consciousness. Fortunately, there are excellent dental treatments that remedy many of the setbacks tooth loss causes. A dentist can restore the function and beauty of your smile.

Dentures and Bridges, a Traditional Approach

A traditional way to treat tooth loss has been with dentures, with capabilities to be made to replace several teeth up to a full arch. Dentures are removable and restore many of the functions of the mouth as well as much of the aesthetics of a smile. Partial dentures use metal clasps to attach to neighboring teeth, while a full set of dentures relies on adhesives to adhere to the gums. Patients participate in selecting the tooth color and shape, helping dentures appear very natural.

Another traditional treatment for missing teeth is the use of a dental bridge. Bridges are used to replace several teeth, permanently clasping to neighboring teeth for stability. Bridges prevent teeth from shifting, and they have much of the appearance and function of natural teeth.

Dental Implants, a Full Restoration of Function

Dental implants have gained a lot of popularity in recent years for their health benefits, natural appearance, and functionality. They are highly successful and provide a beautiful result.

When people lose teeth, a process called resorption immediately begins in the jaw bone. Resorption is a deterioration of the jawbone. This can have a negative impact on a person’s facial structure. Bone loss in the jaw creates a sunken and aged appearance to the mouth.

Dental Implants utilize a titanium post secured into the jawbone through a process called osseointegration. As bone growth envelopes the post, the jaw is stimulated, so resorption does not occur. After about four months, the dentist uses an abutment to attach a crown to the post.

Dental implants are not just a cosmetic treatment for tooth loss; they act as an actual replacement of an entire tooth, from the root to the crown. The crowns can be designed to enhance the color and shape of natural teeth. The result is a restoration of beauty, health, and function.
